Grey reef shark

We found grey reef sharks in this lagoon on the Beveridge Reef in the South Pacific and used bait to habituate them to meeting us at a particular coral head. Over the next fortnight, they ventured closer each day, in groups of up to eight. Most were adult females, with a distinct 'pecking order'. Though these sharks can be dangerous, we never once felt threatened. This dominant female was the biggest (about two metres long), and sometimes, out of apparent curiosity, she would swim straight towards us, then, at the last moment, gybe sharply to change direction. Once I was familiar with this habit, I could preset focus, exposure and flash and concentrate on panning the shark as she cruised in. On this occasion, she was barely 30cm from me.

Fly on boletus fungus

In October, I saw this boletus among some moss in the woodland near my home in Belgium. The next day, I returned with my macro lens. I lay flat on the ground, using my coat to stabilise the camera, and turned my head to one side so I could put my eye to the viewfinder. It was quite uncomfortable, and bugs kept biting me. Just when I'd got the composition right, a fly landed on the boletus. It stayed only two seconds, but that was enough for me to focus on it and take two photographs.

Charging chamois

During the night, chamois graze at heights of 1,000m in the Vosges Mountains, returning to the forest slopes early in the morning. One day in November, I was halfway up a slope at 6am, binoculars in hand, watching a group of chamois quietly grazing below me. Suddenly, just as the first rays of sun filtered through, this male charged. I hadn't noticed a female standing behind me.

Cape ground squirrel in evening light

The ground squirrels in the Kalahari in South Africa were particularly curious and obliging for my camera. One sunset, I was in Mata-Mata, one of the camps in the Gemsbok National Park, where I positioned myself against the sun and waited for the golden light to highlight the squirrel's magnificent whiskers.

Grey heron fishing

In a calm spot of a mountain river in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France, several herons arrived to fish before sunrise. I had constructed a hide from reeds and lay in wait from 4am, until there was enough light to photograph the herons fishing.
